Background

In my firm, I was very much impressed by my project manager. He manages the clients as well as the development team in a kind and efficient way. He has strong knowledge and skills in project management. So, I learned many things indirectly from him. That made me share the key responsibilities of a Project Manager.

Who is Project Manager

A Project Manager is a person who is responsible for the entire project. Project Manager is involved in planning, designing, developing, executing, monitoring, and controlling a project. A project manager should be a good decision maker. Those decisions should benefit their project.

Project Manager assigns tasks to team leaders and to team members. Team members report their status to their respective team leader and the team leaders report the status of team members to the project manager. A project manager may handle more than a project at a time. Project Manager is kind of an intermediary between software development team and clients. Mostly project managers report the project development status to the clients. Thus, a project manager should have good communication skills to interact with them. Frequently, project managers check if the client's requirement is fulfilled in the application being developed.

Some key skills a Project Manager should possess

  • Developing project plans, goals, and budgets; identifying resources if needed
  • Developing schedules and methods for measuring results
  • Guiding and performing strategic analysis for the project

  • Preparing requests for proposals and conducting all necessary meetings to facilitate selection of project services and products
  • Planning and overseeing the preparation and dissemination of project communications.
  • Expertise in overseeing the accounting, costing and billing.
