Getting Started with QlikView

Introduction

QlikView is a business services platform that delivers true self services BI. QlikView is an associative experience that provides answers as fast as you can think of a question. QlikView was built with the simple architectural premise that all data should be held in memory and all calculation should be performed based on the user's requirements. Twenty years ago it was not possible. QlikView was founded in 1993.

QlikView is a patented technology based on an extremely efficient in-memory data model. QlikView allows the user to work with millions of cells of data and still respond to queries in less then a second. Basically it is a business technology showing how the data will be performed using charts, tables and so on. Mainly the QlikView brand delivers software and services that make a data a natural part of how people decide and act. It is Business Intelligence (BI) Software.

QlikView is revolutionizing business intelligence with fast, powerful and visual analysis that is simple to use. QlikView offers all of the features of “traditional” analytics solutions like dashboards and alerts, multi-dimensional analyses, slice-and-dice of data, without the limitations, cost or complexity of traditional BI applications. QlikView solutions can be executed in days, users can be trained in minutes, and end users get results instantly. It is a software that enables many kinds of users from beginners to experts to retrieve data easily from any source like SQL Server, Oracle, and  Excel file, XML or Text Files.

Platform

The Platform of  QlikView  provides all the capabilities that require a complex and costly set of data, on a single user platform. QlikView provides simple, flexible, and more powerful applications and simple reports that is better understandable for the user. The QlikView organizations provides the highly skilled analysts detailed reporting .Executives users require a dashboard for critical business information and  produce a desired result for output performance. QlikView does not allow an organization to use paper reporting and replace them with demand driven reporting. This platform uses ActiveX plug-ins for Microsoft Internet Explorer. An open interface is more compatible with QlikView.

Features

The following are some essential features of QlikView:

Analysis Engine

The QlikView analysis engine is more important for the analysis of the data. It holds all the data that is loaded on a transaction level and this data is part of the QVW file (QlikView file format). The analyst data can be stored  in RAM.

Selection Engine

The Selection Engine processes the user interface and returns the desire result to that query. It provides a very few minute response time on queries, in other words made to the in Memory Data Model.

The Chart and Table Engine

The Chart and Table Engine handles the calculation and graphic display of the charts in the user interface. It calculates multiple "cubes" in real time and it promotes the user selections directly in graphs. There are at least one cube for each graph in the application.

Clients

The QlikView supported clients include an installed Windows EXE client that connects to the QlikView server and the ActiveX  component integrates with other software.

Security

The data in a QlikView application is often confidential and then you need to control the access to the data.

Technical Features

The following are some technical features of QlikView:

  • Data and Data Loading

QlikView loads data directly from most data sources (including ODBC and OLEDB sources, using vendor-specific drivers), any text or table data file (including delimited text files, Excel files, XML files and so on) and any formats, as well as data warehouses and data marts (although these are not required). QlikView also offers a plug-in model for loading custom data sources (Web Services). The QlikVIew is designed to handle a remarkable amount of data. There is no limit to the numbers of tables in an application. QlikView can handle billions of unique values in a given field. RAM is the only other factor that limits the size of an application.

  • Load Script

After the data loading, the QlikView executes a load script. The load script defines the source databases and tables and fields that should be loaded into QlikView. In addition, you can calculate new variables and records using hundreds of functions available in the script.

  • Visual Basic Script and JavaScript

QlikView includes a complete Automation facility with Visual Basic Script (VBScript) and JavaScript.with this powerful, Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) language. It is possible for QlikView application designers to use this application for objects and classes. Developers can develop VBScript or JavaScript for the specific purpose of an application. A Macro can be attached in the QlikView application with the Button object. The user can use this with a simple click to activate, The Macros can be used for specific QlikView Events. A Macro can  be automatically loaded  when the user opens the QlikView application, After the load script is executed or when a selection is made in a list box then Macros can also be used to add functionality to the load script execution. Macro functions can be performed within the load script that can perform the specific operation, developers can create our programs in any language that supports, like Visual Basic or C++. Then these programs can manipulate the QlikView application.
