How to Recover Files From Backup Created in Windows Server 2012

Introduction

In my previous article we created the Backup in Windows Server 2012. In this article you will learn about how to recover files, applications and the System State from a backup created in Windows Server 2012.

Step 1

First, open the "Server Manager" in Windows Server 2012. In the Server Manager, a Tools option is provided at the upper right hand corner, open this "Tools" option and scroll down to the "Windows Server Backup".

In the Server Backup click on the "Local Backup". In the Local Backup three options are available, one for scheduling the backup, the second for creating the backup and the third to recover the already created backup. Click on recover to start the Recovery but remember Recovery can only be started if a backup already exists.

Step 2

As you click on the Recover button a new window will be opened named "Recovery Wizard". The first page will ask you for the location of the backup, you can either provide the backup present on the same server or a backup available on any other server.

If a backup is available on the same server then click on the first option and then click on the "Next" button.

Step 3

The "Backup Date" page will then be opened from where you must select the date the backup was created. If many backups are available then many dates will be available for you, select the date and click on "Next".

In the next page you will be asked for a "Recovery Type" that can be "File and Folder", "Volume", "System State" etc. Click on the option of which the recovery should be done. Here I have selected "System State".

Step 4

Now the "Location for System state Recovery" page will be opened. Here you must select the location where you want to recover the System state to. I have selected the first option, which is "Original Location". If you select the first location then your system will need a restart at the end of the Recovery Operation.

After that click on the "Next" button.

Step 5

Now a Confirmation page will be shown that will show you the details of your selections.

If you want to recover the specified file then click on "Recover" otherwise you can go back and can make changes in the selection procedure.

Step 6

After this your Recovery will be started and it can take a few minutes to do the recovery. All the files will be shown to you that are recovered or are in progress.

When the process is completed don't forget to restart your server.
