Enabling Multi-Process Support In Firefox 54 For Faster Browsing

In this article, we will see how to enable the new Multiprocess feature of Mozilla Firefox on your computer. Before Mutiprocess, browsers were running as a single operating system process. Multiprocess enables browser tabs in the same process while the browser UI runs in a different process. By enabling Multiprocess, users can experience better stability, performance, and security.

Before enabling Multiprocess on your computer, you need to make sure that you aren’t running any incompatible add-ons on your computer. Extensions that are not in a WebExtensions format are not supported in Multiprocess. On my computer, I have already updated to Mozilla Firefox 54. You can also update Firefox by downloading the newest version from the website or using the check update option in Firefox.

Here are the steps to follow.

Step 1

Mozilla Firefox

Check your current Firefox browser version. To get information about the browser, type about:support in the address bar and press enter. If it is version Firefox 54, go ahead with step 2 or update Firefox by downloading the newest version from the website or using the check update option in Firefox.

Step 2

Check Multiprocess's status on your computer. To check the Multprocess status, just scroll down in about:support info page. You can see that Multiprocessing is disabled by default.

From here, you need to find browser.tabs.remote.autostart. To find this, you can simply search in the preference search box or scroll down to the bottom.

After finding browser.tabs.remote.autostart, just double click or click on the toggle option to enable your selected preferance. Now, you have enabled Multiprocess in your browser.

Step 4

To check the status, you can go back to about:support page. Also, you can check your task manager to see the difference in process and RAM usage.

Now, you have successfully enabled Multiprocess in your Firefox.

You can disable it the same way, by double clicking on browser.tabs.remote.autostart.
