SharePoint Online/ Office 365 - InfoPath 2010 Designer Issues After Upgrading Windows 10 From Windows 8

Background:

We have our SharePoint Online / Office 365 site and we have lots of customized InfoPath forms. I have “Microsoft InfoPath Designer 2010” installed on my laptop and we are customizing our InfoPath forms using this. Also on my laptop is Windows 8. Everything was going fine until I upgraded to Windows 10.

Issues:

As soon as I upgraded my Windows 8 with Windows 10, we couldn’t customize our InfoPath forms in InfoPath designer. We faced a couple of issues. The following are the issues faced and their solutions,

  1. When we open our list in browser and in ribbon click on “Customize in InfoPath” as,

    customize
Figure 1: "Customize in InfoPath" option in ribbon for the list

We got the error “Internet Explorer is required to use this feature”,

    infopath

This is the issue with Edge browser. When we upgraded with Windows 10, it comes with Edge browser as,

Solution: We can still open the site in “Internet Explorer” browser. The following are the steps

    a. In Edge browser, at right hand side click on three dots “…” (More option) as in the following figure

    b. Click on “Open with Internet Explorer” option as in the following figure 5, this will open the site in Internet Explorer browser. And then we can open the form in InfoPath Designer.

  2. After upgrading to Windows 10, if we open a site in Internet Explorer browser and click on “Customize in InfoPath” option from ribbon as shown in Fig 1, Microsoft InfoPath Designer 2010 throws an exception “Microsoft InfoPath 2010 or greater is required to use this feature.”, shown in the following figure,

    Solution:

I was really wondering, since I didn't make any changes to InfoPath designer application, what causeed  it to break. So as usual I started Googling.... After Googling a bit I found that this is a known issue when we upgraded to Windows 10. Also this is not only an issue with InfoPath designer bu also for some users of other office products like MS Word, PPT etc.

After Googling for a long time, I found the clue, which is just repairing the InfoPath Designer. Means by going

“Control Panel, Programs and Features, Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010, then click Change” as in the following figure:

    change

After clicking on Change, a dialog box will appear, select the “Repair” option and click on “Continue” option from there as in the following figure:

    repair

Once the above set up completes please try to open InfoPath designer from browser to customize the form it will open successfully.
