Checking to see if server available

Question

Is there way to check if the server is live or active besides writing a sql query insert, delete, or add query and you get the -40 error when the server is not available
.

Is there a command or some type of sql query to verify if the server is active?

I using remote server. So you saying to try to ping the host name and that will verify if the server is connected or not. So the value is returning a bool

From SQL server you can check the connectivity by following command: => Use osql or sqlcmd to try  osql /S /E or osql /S \ /E see whether connection works.
