Get character position and select in Web browser control on mouse hover event

Question

In WebBrowser control I have the text like:
webbrowser.DocumentText = "Fifth You can also format text directly by using the other controls on the Home tab. Most controls offer a choice of using the look from the current theme or using a format that you specify directly.";

When Mouse Hover event I want to get the specific word where the mouse position and the character position of that word.

Parsing HTML documents using regular expressions is not easy and I can't guarantee that the code will work for any other document that might be loaded apart from the three you've got. Last night I was trying to view the source of an 'underlined' document(about 3.7 MB) in Google Chrome but couldn't display it as I was getting the following page(s) have become unresponsive dialog no matter how long I waited. So I didn't really know what was causing the underlining. The situation was no better today so I opened it in notepad instead and the reason it's underlined is because it is in fact just a list of ... links! Moreover I wasn't able to navigate to those links which I tried. So the observed behaviour for this document is in fact what one would expect :) However I'd certainly agree with Sam that the WebBrowser control is frustrating to work with and I'm surprised that this exercise is working as well as it does for most documents.

Check again. I will be very surprised if it is true that  documents which are displayed using an underlined font are treated by the web browser control as a series of links . A WebBrowser control uses the same window and document libraries that IE uses for browsing web sites. Use of an underlined font as a hyperlink would be such a violation of HTML that blatant non-standard behavior such as that would be well known. Think about it; there is no way to determine the address (href) when there is simply text using an underlined font. Something else I will be very surprised if it is true is that you are not frustrated . I expect significant frustration with something such as this. The DOM and related software is cryptic and kludgy. The documentation is poor and many answers seem to be intentionally kept secret. There are a few things that I have tried doing that are supposed to work but no one can tell me why it does not. As far as Microsoft is concerned what I have tried is supposed to work but it does not. There is one or two I should post here in a C# Corner forum to get at least confirmation that I am doing it as documented.

The problem seems to be that documents which are displayed using an underlined font are treated by the web browser control as a series of links. Consquently when you click (or double click) a word the control thinks you're redirecting to the link and produces 'a webpage can't be displayed error'. Worse still the DocumentCompleted event fires causing further havoc. It would be possible to prevent both of these things happening by cancelling the redirection in the Navigating eventhandler if the Url is invalid but it won't alter the fact that the control thinks its a link and won't therefore be able to identify individual words or sentences properly. So is it really necessary for your application to support this kind of document?

Hi The problem is not with the MouseHOver event the problem is with the Click and DoubleClick events of the Web browser document. The problem come for that files is when we set the wbDocument.AllowNavigation = false ;

A problem that we've had throughout with this was the choice of tags for making each word into an HtmlElement. Although ... seemed to be working OK before there's no easy way to tell that a element has no attributes and this was causing problems with the latest set of documents. So what I've done instead is to give the tags the same 'id' attribute. I've used ~~ (double tilde) which would be very unlikely to appear 'naturally' in a document so hopefully the chances of any conflicts will be remote. As a result the smaller documents now load OK and quicker than they did before. The header of The Book of Tea document appears to have a flaw which is why there are some funny squiggles initially and the first word has an index of 17. However there's nothing much I can do with s20210fulltext.html which is far bigger than the other documents and just seems to be too big for the approach we're using to deal with in a reasonably speedy way. The first time I read this question I thought there ought to be a way to get the word under the mouse using the IE DOM but I couldn't see a way which didn't involve clicking the mouse rather than just hovering with it. Even then there was no obvious way to get the index position of the word in the whole document which led me to come up with the idea of making every word of text in the document into an HtmlElement and using regular expressions to do this. Although I eventually got this to work it's not as robust as one would like.

Note that I looked at this thread a few times but I know it would take much more time than I have for this. This question is a big project. It should be many many questions. The mouse hover question alone should be at least one separate question. In HTML there are elements in elements and at the lowest level there are text elements. I suspect that it is the contents of the text elements and only text elements that are needed. If so then making that clear could significantly limit the work necessary to accomplish it. I don't parse HTML using regular expressions. If it were me I would sure look for a more precise solution.

OK I've managed to make some more progress with this. First of all I've added a Timer timer1 to the form and handled its Tick event. Then I've handled the txtMouseHoverWord.TextChanged event so if it hasn't changed within 2 seconds then the word is spoken. As far as the double click event is concerned I think you need to allow a short delay (say 0.5 seconds) before the word is spoken on the single click so that it can if necessary be overridden by the sentence to be spoken if there's a double click. As I haven't had time to get to grips with the speech synthesis code I'm just popping up a MessageBox with the word/sentence to be spoken for now but it seems to be working well. OK the good news is that I've managed to figure out how we can use tags rather than tags to make elements out of each word. The approach I've taken will work as long as all other tags in the document have either an 'id' or a 'style' attribute. I've also changed things around so that loading the document from a uri now works properly in all circumstances. There was a bug before in this part of the text: sample paragraph 2 Foutheen You can also format Because there's no full stop after '2' the regular expression was giving '2Foutheen' as a single word when the tags were removed. To deal with this I've replaced all the tags with '
' which counts as a character and the regular expression now correctly gives two words '2' and 'Foutheen'. As far as the DoubleClick event is concerned there's no way to suppress the Click event from firing first because this will fire as soon as the mouse goes down so you'll just have to find a way to work around that. If a single click is highlighting a word but a double click is highlighting a whole sentence including that word then I can't really see why there's any conflict. Which you suggest for Click and Double click events that I already tried but when user perform double click the click event automatically fired there I have the issue how to handle this because I want both event and in single click I want to take the cursor position word and in double click event I want to take cursor position senatnce. When perform the double click the single click event automatically fires and my actual functionality is disturb. Also for the Navigate URI I have the mouse HOver problems. Please see the attachment problem which i required all the functionality. I have the display problems. Please look and suggest the solution.

If you do need the info in the HtmlElementEventArgs when processing the double click event then I've thought of an easy way to access it. The double click event isn't normally supported for an HtmlDocument because it highlights the word which the mouse cursor is over at the time. Hi You are correct when we use the Span tag that will not work properly but when i use the font also the display is not proper the actual display font size and other details or not display as it is. Any way that other issue but my major issue is when we bind the data through the URI through Navigate in this case it is not work. But as you said that will work and I tried but I am unlucky. Can you please send the sample code for this example. Also how we will manage the Click and Double click events in Web Browser. For Click there is direct event in Webbrowser.Document.Click but for Double click how we will manage can you please send some sample code for the same. It's very urgent please help me out to fix these issues.

Unfortunately it no longer works correctly if you use tags to surround the words as there are already tags in the html document. You can see this by placing the mouse on the first word (First) which now shows a position of 6 rather than 0. However if you don't want to change the appearance of the text you can use empty tags instead which do still work properly. The same code should work OK when loading the document via a url rather than a string as long as it doesn't contain any tags.
