How do I trap zero rows returned from sql statement c#

Forums such as this ask that the documentation and articles and other resources be used before asking for assistance. The documentation that is totally relevant to this question is easy to find. If you read the documentation you will discover that I have already told you what it says. Forums such as this are for asking questions that are not easily answered. When you have a question that is not easily answered you will likely get plenty of help from others that are eager to help if they know the answers. If we were to instead spend time looking up stuff that is easily found for a few people then those few would consume the majority of the time available for helping others. Soon the few people would become many people and the forums would be flooded with questions. When I ask a question I am happy to get help locating the documentation or article that has the answer. I think the one that is quibbling is the one that refuses to do what they are asked to do before requesting assistance.

This isn't helping me answer my question just quibbling over semantics of my question. If you say look at the documentation then I assume the answer is there right? If you know the answer just say it.

Note that in your original post you did not show what sqlStmt contains nor did you say it was a select. Your original post says nothing except sample code. If you are not getting the answers you expect then in your original post you should have given a clue to what you are asking for. Look at the documentation again; it is extremely clear why the return value from ExecuteNonQuery is  always -1 for select statements . If you already knew that then posting the sample code was useless; you should have asked how to do what you need to do.

See original post for: cmd.Connection.Open(); rows = cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); if (rows == -1) { Response.Write(No Rows returned from query); Response.End(); and viewing the doc on this command does not show how to do it. the sqlStmt that gets passed is a dynamic select statement. rows passed back from this is the rows affected and is always -1 for select statements.

You did not show what the command is; I assume it is a select. If so then please read the documentation of the ExecuteNonQuery Method.
