how to use a list as a property

Question

This little bit of code wasn't working for me. I was wondering the proper way to use a list as a property, instead of setting it as a public member.

Class Company
{
   ..
   private list<string> employees{get; set;}
   ..
}

..
..// in main.
Company myCompany = new Company();
myCompany.employees.add("jim");    // doesn't work
myCompany.employees.add("sue");   // doesn't work

The code in your original question had the other problems that I described. Please in the future post the correct code. If you post incorrect code then you waste the time of people trying to help you. I did show in my reply that you need to instantiate the object. Please mark my response as the answer.

thanks guy. I actually found my problem. I was simply forgetting to instantiate the obj. I needed this. myCompany.myList = new List (); myCompany.myList.Add(jim);

Yeah sorry about the case and scope typos I had earlier. I was in a hurry. here's my code from visual studio that I was running. public class Person { public string fName; public string lName; } public class Company { public List myList { get; set; } } public Window1() { InitializeComponent(); Person jim = new Person { fName = jimmy lName = bridger }; Company myCompany = new Company(); myCompany.myList.Add(jim); // stops here when stepping through.. } It still isn't working do you guys have any ideas? I would prefer to keep myList as a property.

C# is case sensitive that being said if list was not already defined some where else it would not have compiled would it!!

C# is case-sensitive which means that add is not Add and list is not List. You must be precise with C# even if you don't like it. Another problem is that if you want to use a member from outside the class you must make the member public. Also you must allocate objects. The following works. class Company { List _employees = new List (); public List employees { get { return _employees; } set { _employees = value; } } } static void Main(string[] args) { Company myCompany = new Company(); myCompany.employees.Add(jim); myCompany.employees.Add(sue); }
