How to write Event Handlers!?!?

Question

Hi All I am currently trying real hard on how to write a event handler to populate a person & group field with current user logged in when i upload or create a new file that requires to be checked in before i publish it. I would also need to populate the Single Text Field with the current user's department. Many Thanks Ahead!

I am not familiar with Sharepoint so I probably cannot help much but I hope it helps that I ask for clarification. Do you still need help? If so then are you now asking for help with a event handler for the ItemUpdated Event?

Hi All I Managed to write a simple project that updates a People & Group Field during file upload and it also has a event to update the field when user changes something through the edit properties page. i provided the source code inside got comments above each codes should be self explaining.. =D Cheers everyone!

Thanks Suthish and Sam i am current stuck with trying to write a sharepoint event handler that fires when i update a person & group field called and the single line text field be updated with the new Document Owner's Department. I tried writing the code in the ItemUpdated Event but to no avail.. If you still need help then it would help if you clarify your question; I sure don't understand what you mean by event handler.
