Need to connect existing calendar web part to separate SQL database
I don't have a lot of experience programming for the SharePoint and I need help with a task that was assigned to me. The portal currently has a out-of-the-box calendar web part. No customization has been done to the site at present. The requirements are as follows:
Using: SharePoint Portal 2007/SQL Server 2005
Purpose: The calendar will be used to record the time techs spend at clients, to track their time and to know what they are currently working on.
Description: when data (record) is added to the calendar it needs to be recorded in a separate SQL database instead of in SharePoint so that later it can be pulled by SQL Reporting services.
My questions:
1. Is there a way for me to pull the data from out-of-the-box calendar into SQL Reporting Services?
2. If not, can I somehow modify the out-of-the-box calendar web part to send and retreive data from a separate SQL database (not the MOSS configuration database) and if yes then how? (I have Visual Studio 2008 Developer and Sharepoint Designer 2007 tools available to me)
3. If no is the answer to my question #2, Is it possible to get a calendar template that I could quickly modify instead of creating a complete new web part?
