Well I can't see any obvious reason why that code shouldn't increment the EId value. So are you saying that E9 is being read from the database but even though the code is getting executed it still displays E9 rather than E10?

One thing that has just occurred to me is that after saving E10 back to the database you will then have a problem with the query as it stands because E10 will order before E2 to E9. So the query will always return E9. To avoid this problem change the query to the following: string query = SELECT TOP(1) EId FROM emps ORDER BY CAST(SUBSTRING (EId 2 LEN(EId) - 1) AS INT) DESC;
