New to programming and need help with something basic

Question

Hi fellas! i've been trying to figure out this for 2 nights now and im starting to feel

like a COMPLETE idiot.

So i figured you guys with some experience could help me out.

I need to see the simple code for a basic windows form-app that

Contains 2 simple things

A checkbox, and a text-window of some sort.

When i check the box, a text appears in the textbox.

if i figure that out i know where to start.

what im trying to do is a simple program for our seller at the office, he always manages

to get about a third of the info from the customer that we on the productionfloor need to know.

So i figured if i make a simple app that he can have running when he has the customer on the phone

he can just check boxes and text appears -every box should have a certain text assigned to it.

that way the text that appears can be used when creating an orderform for us on the floor.

we work with printing and putting logos on clothes and similar.

Hi Jonas If your descriptions are static for each text box this will do what you want without too much work but has the potential to be more flexible if you need it to be private void checkbox1_CheckedChanged(object sender EventArgs e) { textbox1.Text = checkbox1.Checked ? Is Checked : Un Checked; } eg. textbox1.Text = checkbox1.Checked ? getSingleSided() : getDoubleSided(); In this case you could get other information from a method / function before assigning the text values depending on checked state.

So what you are trying to do is to have checkboxes and then based on what is checked or not checked create text that describes the order. Does that spound close enough? What happens if you need to find all orders with a specific operation such as all orders for logos on the left chest. If your orders are saved somewhere such as a database then you would need a program to read all orders and look in the text for the words left chest. It seems unlikely you will need to do that but it is just an example. A better way is to store a code; a numberr or something that is more efficient and more conducive to use by software. Then that could make the program easier to use for finding orders with a specific operation. You could have a lookup capability that could look up the text for printing the text in the order and elsewhere.

Hi Jonas The pro's and con's over one method or the other is simply how much code you want to write especially if you have a large number of check boxes but certainly what Anthony showed is more readable. Something else to consider is how many check boxes will you have and will the number change based on what production item is being ordered? For multiple check boxes you could be writing a mountain of code to do what you want better to have a generic function to handle all the check boxes. Something like this will handle hundreds of check boxes... private void genericCheckedChanged(object sender EventArgs e) { CheckBox ch = (CheckBox)sender; textbox1.Text += ch.Checked == true ? getCheckBoxText(ch.Tag) :  +  ; //each check box has a Tag property give a numeric value 1 2 3 4 5 6 } public string getCheckBoxText(object tag) { int which = null; string text = null; int.TryParse(tag.ToString() out which); switch(which) { case 1: text = Upper left chest break; case 2: text = Upper right chest break; case 3: text = Upper middle chest break; } return(text); } This would make your whole system dynamic and allow you to (with modification) load text from a file csv xml or database. Edit: You will also need to deal with the possibility that a check box has been checked when it should not have been so when it is clicked a second time the text box will need to reflect that change. You can do this by having a method that reads the checked state of all check boxes in a for loop using the controls collection.

Ok here goes. each box should have an individual textline attached to it -meaning if i check it the text attached to that checkbox should appear in the Textbox. i will need several checkboxes all with individual texlines attached to it. When i check multiple checkboxes i will need the text for each checked box to pop up in the Texbox. see attached image [url] http://rnkddg.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pz-3pa97vlI5yaTHaXT3A8_GAQZbGOl26kw7vNZnXvQL6_qX6VFrF049xn6OUgMhdNHTx7wQpYG1WG2Lm785A9QIFouXi-UqG/test%202.JPG [/url] as i said before im working for a small company with me and another guy who handles the production and we have one seller. our seller has a bad habit of not knowing what details to ask for when he has a customer on the phone critical information that we need as it is now he writes orders by hand and they rarely contain a complete set of instructions of what the customer wants. so we allways end up asking our seller for details that he has basicly forgotten because he doesn't write stuff down fast enough so what i want to do is create a simple program for him to use during a phonecall -with checkboxes that results in text -rather than having him write everything down. what we do is printing and striping cars pressing logos on clothes and producing signs for various companys the dayly production is basicly made up of 90% vinyl-cutting and printing. so as the first example-image shows (in my first post) for instance an outline of a T-shirt imagen he's talking to a customer who wants 200 Tshirts with their logo on it our seller can have that app infront of him telling the customer what he has to choose from chest right center or chest left (as an example) and the customer says i want the logo on the left chest then our seller can just check the box on the left chest and wola the text appears in the Textbox. when the phonecall is over he can just copy\paste the text that has appeared in the Textbox into a digital version of the order-form and print it out. and wola we will allways have consistant order-layouts with all the info we need. the program also serves as a helping hand when it comes to What to ask for -for our seller he sometimes FORGETS to ask critical things like where on the chest the logo should be. i know he's an idiot but we love him lol so we wanna make it easy for him and by doing that allso making it easy for us to produce. now you have an idea of what im trying to build - logos on clothes is just an example - this can be expanded for all the type of products we offer.

Lizard i tried your code now when i know which goes where when i copy\paste (slowly learning the structure) i managed to get it working flawlessly which was funny cuz i realize you can write the same task in several different ways - it's nice to see the structure tho with all the if's and whatnot it makes sense if you have never read code before -if you know what i mean Thanks a heap -i must say if there's a couple hundred checkboxes it would certainly be alot less code Both works just as good! =) what's the pro's and con's with each type of structure? if you compare the both i mean -im curious =) Thanks guys for all the help!! edit: Ah i see so it does the same commands but the visible code is just.. minimalistic -i think i'll get the hang of this slowly but i guess that's the safest way hehe. now multiple checkboxes that Adds text with a coma between each text-input cant get it to work

Hi Jonas Yeah although in the end without feeding the method parameters it still works out to the same amount of code. Your best using the way i did before you go onto the more complex method of Lizard but as Lizard says it is more flexible as you can feed multiple parameters in to the function and still give it a result. e.g. if (getSingleSided == True); { \blah } else { \blah }

You can increase the size of a normal textbox. Add the textbox click on the play button and select multiline. In regards to your other question can you mark my original answer as correct then we will proceed further. Thanks Anthony

Thanks Lizard and Clarke for such quick reply! i managed to get the basic code from Clarke to work i've never written any code before so figuring out how to copy\paste the damn thing was the first task haha Lizard what you are saying probably makes sense if one knows a bit of programing but this is greek to me im sorry i know you guys sigh a little when noobs come and ask stupid crap about the most basic things out there but hey.. gotta start somewhere hehe the code i did looks like this namespace WindowsFormsApplication1 { public partial class Form1 : Form { public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } private void checkBox1_CheckedChanged(object sender EventArgs e) { if (box1.Checked == true) richTextBox1.Text = The Check Box is Checked; else if (box1.Checked == false) richTextBox1.Text = ; } } } i changed it to a richTextbox just so i could increase the size of the box a bit. What i wanna do now is add another box and if i check it it will add text in the rich text document i tried adding a new checkbox copy paste the code and renaming it to checkbox2 but then no text appeared in the textbox at all. guess it wasn't that simple. what i wanna end up with is a simple program for our seller to check various boxes that matches the customers needs while in phone and the different boxes will just add text in a richtextbox seperated with a coma logo right chest logo center chest for instance if those two boxes are checked.
