play sound in an external sound card

Hello :)

I'm developping in an application in Csharp and I want to read a sound file in an external sound card,is there a function which give me the possibility to play sound using the name of the sound card and the name of the audio file .

Mark Heath gave me this remarque : In your button click handlers you are creating a WaveOut device setting its device number and then your playSound function plays sound using a completely different IWavePlayer (an instance of DirectSoundOut). No Nicole you are not bothering me except it is frustrating trying to help and having difficulty helping. Most of this would be easy for experienced developers. And to answer your other question yes I definitely understand that you need to be able to select a sound device for sending sound to. Note that in my program and in Frogleg's program we list sound devices (speakers). Both programs allow you to select which speakers to use. Does that work in my program? If you use my program are you able to play the sound in different speakers only one speaker (or set of speakers) at a time? Also will there be just one microphone?

Yes I understand but my problem is if I want to create 3 buttons and I have 3 sound cards and each button is related to a sound card (for example button1 is related to sound card1 ...) in our case when I click on button1 I want to hear sound from the speaker wich is related to sound card1 (the same for button2 and button3) ??????? Nicole my code is not compatible with Frogleg's. Sorry. We are using different software. I am using DirectSound and Frogleg is using something else I think NAudio. Look at the playToolStripMenuItem_Click method in my code. The first thing it does is to ensure that there is one and only one item selected in the listbox of audio output devices. If there is then it gets audio information that is in a ClassAudioDevice object. Then it creates a Device object; note that in the constructor it uses ad.DriverGuid. For DirectSound devices are identified using a GUID whereas for the software that Frogleg is using devices are identified by a simple number. After creating a device for the speaker that we want to use my code creates a Buffer for the wave file then plays it. For what you need to do I think it is a matter of selecting a microphone to read from and a speaker or speakers to write to and then read from the microphone and write to the speaker(s). The devices will be identified by their GUID.

That is probably the problem that I described previously. One thing easy to do is to execute the program without the debugger; in other words use Ctrl-F5 instead of F5. You won't get the exception when you execute the program without the debugger. To execute the program with the debugger you need to turn off the warning as I said. To do that with the project open use Debug | Exceptions. Then in the dialog you get from that expand the Managed Debugging Assistants and then scroll down to Loader Lock then uncheck the checkbox for Loader Lock. So in other words you do not want Loader Lock to be thrown.

Sorry Frogleg but I cannot get that program to play anywhere except the default output device. I tried both forms and everything I could see to try. I had to modify (I think) form2 because it was using device 0 instead of device 1 and there were a few cases where it was not doing a new for the device but after those modifications I still could not get desired results. The attached project using DirectSound works except occasionally I don't get anything when I click play. Usually I get something played and when I do it is played on the selected device whether speaker or headset regardless of what is the default. I am using VS 2010. I am nearly certain that I sent this project to Nicole a few weeks ago but she did not say anything about it. Note that one trick is that we must turn off a certain debugging option; the debugging option will warn about initialization of DLLs in a DLLMain but for DirectSound it is not a problem so it is okay to turn off the message.

I have written a managed DirectSound program that I can use to play a sound on either sound output device regardless of which is the default. It works for me. I am nearly certain that I sent it to Nicole about three weeks ago. Unfortunately I eventually encounter a problem with DirectSound and .Net and VS 2010 so I was unable to proceed with it. There must be a solution; I really doubt that Microsoft would not solve the problem. I don't see anything saying that DirectSound is not supported. I do find people encountering the problem but I can't find a solution that works. First I do not find any evidence that the problem is Visual Studio 2010. I do find comments indicating that the problem is that DirectSound uses an earlier version of .Net. I don't understand how it could be that VS 2008 would work and VS 2010 would not. Projects can be set to use previous versions of .Net so it does not make sense to me that VS 2010 does not work because it uses .Net version 4. I have no doubt that the VS 2010 IDE uses .Net version 4 but the compiler can build executables that use earlier versions of .Net. I have found solutions that use a setting for the assembly in the config.sys that specify that the assembly is mixed mode or something like that but I can't get that to work either. Unless we can find a solution somehow else we need to submit a question to a MSDN forum. I did submit a comment but that was at a time when I thought I had a solution.

If you connect front headphones to the front jacks on your computer case the speaker output is muted by default (in built switch in the jack) So front panel headphones cannot come into the equation

The following is the output from your first program executing in my system. The two input devices are from a webcam and a headset. I have a speaker and the headset as output. I think my speakers are shown twice. When I execute the program the output always goes to the default output device which is the headset when it is connected otherwise the speaker. The output does not go to the speakers when the headset is connected regardless of what I do.
