Visual Studio (C# 2008; SQL Server 2008) free edition and 64 don't work togheter

I’m a senior but I still want to keep my head going. For a hobby I have developed different programs in Excel, Access… When I saw the generous offer to use Visual Studio (C# 2008; SQL Server 2008) I thought this would be a good way to learn something new and rewrite the applications in today’s world. I’m using Vista SP1 Business and 64-bit. After a lot of installation problems I finally got everything running. The problem is I can’t use

-        Access = no OLEDB providers for 64-bit

-        SQL database engine = error 26

-        SQL server compact edition = connections errors when trying to migrate access to compact

I’m a newbie with basic data skills so I can probably do a lot of errors, but after a month of trial and errors, reading the Internet I have the feeling that this free editions don’t work together on 64-bit.

If I buy the products will they work or does someone have some link tips, good advice.

I think the products really would give me a lot of pleasure for my needs, but what is the meaning of free if it does not work.
