Simple mate  In-order to maintain the DATA upon multiple request & response b/w server & client . . Best example is HTML TEXTBOX control which can hold the data entered when the page is refreshed :) Where as ASP SERVER CONTROLS i.e TextBox can hold data via ViewState when we refresh .. HTML CONTROLS ARE STATELESS SO THATS Y WE USE ASP.NET SERVER CONTROLS We can maintain the state in different ways via session  view  application  cookie  query string :) ..
