In this article, I will show you how to make Custom Recovery in Windows 8 and 8.1, if by chance refresh and recovery setting of windows get deleted or formatted by you, then at that time custom recovery can help you out.
Windows 8 and 8.1 having a system setting from which you can refresh your PC or recover your PC by not affecting your files, it’s like a system restore point in windows 7. Suppose like your PC is totally infected by Viruses, or take it like your PC is not working or supporting you properly. At that time we can use refresh and recover option from setting panel in Windows 8 and 8.1 that can help you out by making a sImiliar operation like formatting your PC, but actually its not formatting the windows, it IS just removing your installed files and making your PC better in working.
There are three options under Settings Recover.
- Refresh Your PC without affecting your files.
- Remove Everything and Reinstall Windows.
- Factory Windows.
You can use the first method that is “Refresh Your PC without affecting your files” as it is the best method to make your windows effective. When you purchase your Windows 8.1 or higher, the recover settings comes by default. Now suppose you formatted your PC without knowing that you might lose your recover settings, at that time this Custom Recovery works for you.
Requirements:
- Windows 8 or higher.
- Bootable files of your Windows OS.
- CMD [With Admin Rights].
- 1 Hour with this tutorial.
Step 1: Open the folder where window 8 bootable files were kept. Go to the Sources Folder, then Install. Wim Files [Copy this file by Pressing Shift and Right Click and Copy as Path].

Step 2: Open CMD with Admin Rights, then right click on CMD and Run as Admin. Now write the following command:
md c:\test\ and press Enter. [Command will create test folder or subdirectory inside C: drive].

dism /mount-image /imagefile: Right click and paste the install.wim path.

Complete the command by typing /index:1 /mountdir:C:\test\ /readonly and press enter.
The complete command goes like the following:
dism /mount-image /imagefile:"D:\software\Operating system\windows10\en_windows_10_multiple_editions_x64_dvd_6846432\sources\install.wim" /index:1 /mountdir:C:\test\ /readonly
After this command press enter, you have to sit for a while as this command mounting the image. When it gets completed you will see the operation completed successfully.

Step 3: Now go to the C: directory and follow the path - C:\test\Window\System32\Recovery Folder. You will see WinRE.wim File, right click and copy that file.

Step 4: Again browse to C:\Windows\System32\Recovery Folder, then paste the WinRE.Wim file here. If admin right prompt you by asking “You need to provide admin permission to copy this folder”, just continue and paste it.
Step 5: Again get back to the cmd and write the following command.
reagentc /setreimage /path C:\Windows\System32\Recovery and Press Enter.

Note: As I had already done this process that is why I got the following message: “Window RE is already Enabled”, otherwise you will get the following message: “Operation Successfully”.
Step 6: Your refresh, Recover Option are enabled and you just have to unmount the image file by writing the following command:
dism /unmount-wim /mountdir:C:\test\ /discard and Press Enter.
Step 7: Now go to the Window, then Settings and Update and Security [Windows 10].

Step 8: Go to the Recovery tab and reset the PC.

Go ahead to refresh and recover your PC, it also works even if you can enter into the setting panel or into the OS. Just try to restart the PC 3-4 times and you see Advanced Option will enable. There you can see Recovery option.
