Adding Controls To Templates in Windows Store Apps

Introduction

In this article I describe how to create Windows Store Apps for adding controls to a Template using JavaScript. This app embeds a ratings control and displays the rating supplied by the data. This page uses a JavaScript function to template the items, which enables event listeners to be attached to individual items.

I assume you can create a simple Windows Store App using JavaScript; for more help visit Simple Windows Store Apps using JavaScript.

To start the creation of the apps, add one JavaScript page by right-clicking on the js folder in the Solution Explorer and select "Add" > "New item" > "JavaScript Page" and then provide an appropriate name. In the same way, add a HTML page to your project.

Write the following code in the default.html:

<!DOCTYPE html>

<html>

<head>

    <meta charset="utf-8" />

    <title></title>

    <link rel="stylesheet" href="//Microsoft.WinJS.1.0/css/ui-light.css" />

    <script src="//Microsoft.WinJS.1.0/js/base.js"></script>

    <script src="//Microsoft.WinJS.1.0/js/ui.js"></script>

    <link rel="stylesheet" href="/css/default.css" />

    <script src="/js/default.js"></script>

</head>

<body role="application" style="background-color:lightcoral">

    <center><div id="rootGrid">

        <div id="content">

            <h1 id="featureLabel"></h1>

            <div id="contentHost"></div>

        </div>

    </div>

        </center>

</body>

</html>

Write the following code in the default.js:

(function () {

    "use strict";

    var appTitle = "";

    var pages = [

        { url: "page.html" }

    ];

    function activated(eventObject) {

        if (eventObject.detail.kind === Windows.ApplicationModel.Activation.ActivationKind.launch) {

            eventObject.setPromise(WinJS.UI.processAll().then(function () {

                var url = WinJS.Application.sessionState.lastUrl || pages[0].url;

                return WinJS.Navigation.navigate(url);

            }));

        }

    }

    WinJS.Navigation.addEventListener("navigated"function (eventObject) {

        var url = eventObject.detail.location;

        var host = document.getElementById("contentHost");

        host.winControl && host.winControl.unload && host.winControl.unload();

        WinJS.Utilities.empty(host);

        eventObject.detail.setPromise(WinJS.UI.Pages.render(url, host, eventObject.detail.state).then(function () {

            WinJS.Application.sessionState.lastUrl = url;

        }));

    });

    WinJS.Namespace.define("App", {

        appTitle: appTitle,

        pages: pages

    });

    WinJS.Application.addEventListener("activated", activated, false);

    WinJS.Application.start();

})();

Write the following code in the Page.html:

<!DOCTYPE html>

<html>

<head>

    <title></title>

    <link rel="stylesheet" href="/css/page6.css" />

    <script src="/js/script.js"></script>

</head>

<body>

    <div data-win-control="App.pageInput">

    </div>

    <div data-win-control="App.pageOutput">

        <div id="listView"

            class="win-selectionstylefilled"

            data-win-control="WinJS.UI.ListView"

            data-win-options="{

                itemDataSource: myDataWithRatings.dataSource,

                itemTemplate: MyInteractiveTemplate,

                selectionMode: 'none',

                tapBehavior: 'none',

                swipeBehavior: 'none',

                layout: { type: WinJS.UI.GridLayout }

            }">

        </div>

    </div>

</body>

</html>

Write the following code in the Script.js:

var MyInteractiveTemplate = WinJS.Utilities.markSupportedForProcessing(function MyInteractiveTemplate(itemPromise) {

    return itemPromise.then(function (currentItem) {

        var result = document.createElement("div");

        result.className = "regularListIconTextItem";

        result.style.overflow = "hidden";

        var image = document.createElement("img");

        image.className = "regularListIconTextItem-Image";

        image.src = currentItem.data.picture;

        result.appendChild(image);

        var body = document.createElement("div");

        body.className = "regularListIconTextItem-Detail";

        body.style.overflow = "hidden";

        result.appendChild(body);

        var title = document.createElement("h4");

        title.innerText = currentItem.data.title;

        body.appendChild(title);

        var ratingsControl = new WinJS.UI.Rating();

        WinJS.Utilities.addClass(ratingsControl.element, "win-interactive");

        body.appendChild(ratingsControl.element);

        var currentRating = currentItem.data.rating;

        if (typeof (currentItem.data.userRating) === "number") {

            ratingsControl.userRating = currentRating;

        } else {

            ratingsControl.averageRating = currentRating;

        }

        ratingsControl.addEventListener("change", function (eventObject) {

            var newRating = eventObject.detail.tentativeRating;

            currentItem.data.rating = newRating;

            currentItem.data.userRating = newRating;

            WinJS.log && WinJS.log("Rating for " + currentItem.data.title + " changed to " + newRating, "app", "status");

        });

        return result;

    });

});

var myDataWithRatings = new WinJS.Binding.List([

        { title: "Lenovo", text: "Lenovo", picture: "images/1.jpg", rating: 3 },

        { title: "HP", text: "HP", picture: "images/2.jpg", rating: 1 },

        { title: "Samsung", text: "Samsung", picture: "images/3.jpg", rating: 1 },

        { title: "Dell", text: "Dell", picture: "images/4.jpg", rating: 2 },

]);
