Drive Defragmentation in Windows 8

Introduction

In Windows 8 the name for a many features have been changed. Such as Windows anytime upgrade is now called "Add feature to Windows 8", Optimize drive upgrade is now called "Disk Defragmenter". The Defragmenter tools help you to defragment the hard disk, and therefore, combines the data of a file into one place on the disk. This leads to a noteworthy gain in hard disk operations.

When you defragment a hard disk then the empty space of the hard disk is combined, so that it can be utilized faster, and the future data gets defragmented space it can use. You need to defragment a drive because data on the drive becomes fragmented over time. So that it becomes unevenly distributed on your hard disk. This leads to an overhead when reading from and writing to the disk.

How to Defragment a disk in Windows 8.

Step 1

Go to the search box and type "dfrgui" and click on the icon that appears in the results window.

Step 2

The Optimize Drive window will be opened that shows the fragmented status of your disk. In this windowsthere are two buttons in a list; "Analyze" and "Optimize".

Step 3

The Analyze button just checks the fragmentation status of the drive. The analyze status of the drive determines whether defragmentation of the drive is required or not.

Step 4

The Optimize button starts the defragmentation of the selected drive.

Step 5

Following both buttons a "Change Settings" button is available. When you click on the Change Settings button, a settings window will be opened. Using the settings window you can change the automatic scheduled time of the Defragmentation process. You can also enable or disable the defragmentation process.
