Difference Between SharePoint Environments

Introduction

Organizations use SharePoint to create websites. You can use it as a secure place to store, organize, share and access information from nearly any device.

This SharePoint can be used in the following two ways:

  • SharePoint Online, Office 365 cloud

  • SharePoint On Premise, SharePoint server in your local system

Organizations can deploy and manage SharePoint Server on-premises. It includes all the features of SharePoint Foundation. And it offers additional features and capabilities such as Enterprise Content Management, business intelligence, enterprise search, personal sites and Newsfeed

A cloud-based service, hosted by Microsoft, for businesses of all sizes. Instead of installing and deploying SharePoint Server on-premises, any business can subscribe to an Office 365 plan or to the standalone SharePoint Online service.

SharePoint Server 2013 builds on the investments of previous SharePoint releases to help:

  • Lower IT costs with a flexible and scalable collaboration platform
  • Better manage risk by safeguarding your business with secure and reliable capabilities
  • Increase productivity through cost-effective and efficient management

SharePoint Online delivers the powerful features of SharePoint without the associated overhead of managing the infrastructure on your own. Flexible management options ensure that you still retain the control you need to meet the compliance requirements of your organization. You can purchase SharePoint in the cloud as a standalone offering or as part of an Office 365 suite, where you can also get access to Exchange, Lync, the Office clients and web apps.

On-premise solutions require an internal IT support structure including people, hardware and software, or the use of a Managed Service Provider (MSP).
