Introduction

I tried to create a SharePoint 2013 workflow using the Designer. I clicked on "List Workflow" in the ribbon interface, but in the wizard I was unable to select the "Platform Type" as SharePoint 2013 workflow and it was showing the following message in the bottom:



Error Message

The option for the SharePoint 2013 Workflow platform is not available because the workflow service is not configured on the server. Please contact your server administrator.

Reason

This is because the Workflow Manager is not installed & configured or the workflow service is not connected to the SharePoint 2013 server. In SharePoint 2013, the Workflow Manager must be downloaded and installed separately. By default the Workflow Manager will not be installed when you install SharePoint 2013 whereas in SharePoint 2010 the workflow engine is installed automatically when you install the SharePoint 2010 product. If you don't install Workflow Manager 1.0 for SharePoint 2013 then you will be able to create only SharePoint 2010 workflows.

Solution

Install and configure Workflow Manager 1.0 for SharePoint 2013 server. Please use the following procedure:

• Install Workflow Manager 1.0 for SharePoint 2013 server.
• Configure Workflow Manager 1.0 for SharePoint 2013 server.

Once done I was able to select the "Platform Type" as SharePoint 2013 workflow.
