How to Configure Logon Attempt Restriction of an FTP Site Which is on IIS

Introduction

In this article you will learn how to configure a Logon Attempt Restriction of an FTP Site that is on IIS.

In one of my previous articles I told you How to Configure FTP Directory Browsing Options.

This article will help you to change the settings applied on logon restrictions of an FTP Site. You might want to allow more attempts to log onto a FTP Site but you are not allowed to do that or you might want that if someone is logging onto the FTP Site yet he has tried many times then he should be restricted from any further logon attempts. In both of these cases this article will help you to configure the logging restrictions as needed.

Step 1

First of all open the "Administrative Tools" from the Start Menu.

Now the Administrative Tools Window will be opened, here an option will be available named "IIS Manager", open it.

Step 2

Now a new window will be opened. An option will be available in this window named "Connections". In this option you need to right-click on "Server Level".

Now in the FTP Features double-click on the "FTP Logon Restriction" to open it.

Step 3

In the FTP Logon Attempt restriction page you will see that by default the number of attempts are 4 and the time period is 30.

On this page check the "Enable FTP Logon Attempt Restrictions", this will allow you to make changes in the number of login attempts and the time period. Change these values as needed.

Step 4

There are two Radio check boxes also available in which "Deny IP Address" is checked by default. This is checked because if any user has used the maximum number of logon attempts then his IP Address would be denied and he would be asked to change his IP Address and then try again.

If you select the second option, in other words "Write the Log only" then IIS will not restrict the clients even if the maximum number of failed attempts is exceeded, it will only write a log and after that you will be again allowed to try logging in.

After making the changes click on the "Apply" button that is provided in the Actions panel.
