How to Create Virtual Directory of a Website

Introduction

In this article you will learn about how to create a Virtual Directory of a Website.

A Virtual Directory appears to a client browser as if it is in a Web Server's Root Directory, eventhough it can reside somewhere else. This helps to publish Web Content, in other words not located under the Root Folder of the Web Server.

Step 1

First of all open the Administrative Tools from the Start Menu.

In the Administrative Tools Wizard an option will be available named IIS Manager; double-click on this option to open it.

Step 2

Now the IIS Manager Wizard will be opened, here on the left hand side a Connections Pane will be available. The Connection Pane will show your Server Name.

Expand your Server's Name. Now you will see a Folder named Sites, expand this folder. That folder will contain all the sites that you have configured on the IIS, right now I haven't configured any Websites so only Default Website is available under it.

Step 3

Now right-click on the Website for which you want to create the Virtual directory, and choose to "Add Virtual Directory".

In the Add Virtual Directory Wizard, first provide the Alias for this Website, after that provide the physical path of the folder where your Website is residing.

After providing the Alias Name and Physical Path you need to click on the "Connect as" Button.

Step 4

The Connect As Button will open a new Wizard that will let you either select a Specific User or an Application User.
