Wikipedia says, “A party is a gathering of people who have been invited by a host for the purposes of socializing, conversation, recreation or as part of a festival. A party will typically feature food and beverages and often music and dancing or other forms of entertainment.”
According to Dictionary.com, “A party is a social gathering, as of invited guests at a private home, for conversation, refreshments, entertainment, etc.”
Let me rephrase it. The meaning of a real party is "when you hang out with a group of people and enjoy the company and surroundings. You enjoy it so much that you forget all your problems. You just live in the moment.”
We can put the people involved in our lives in the three buckets, family, friends, and work. The family and friends are constant. You already born with the family. Friends you make when you grow up. These two groups are pretty much set and I am sure most of the time you do enjoy their company.
Only work group seems to be the variable. Work is also the place where we spend most of our time. On average, we work 10 hours a day, we sleep 7-8 hours a day and rest of the time is everything else. Work is usually a place that is "not fun". If we can figure out a way to have fun at work, we then have fun everywhere.
Let's Think About It
Let me ask you a simple question.
Why do you think Facebook is so popular? Why do you always see a need for checking your Facebook for updates? A study reveals that smartphone users check Facebook 14 times a day. The popularity of Facebook and other popular social media websites and apps is living proof that we are bored in life.
Here is one more question for you.
Do you check Facebook updates when you are on a date? Or in a movie theatre or hanging out with friends, or playing a cricket match or eating? Most likely,
no.
OK, here is my last question.
When was the last time you did something and totally forgot about time? I bet you didn't even think of checking your Facebook status then.
Do you ever wonder, why?
I bet it is because you were doing something that you enjoy doing.
I just read an interesting article,
Why do People Get Bored, by Om Swami. In this article, Swami talks about lazy boredom and active boredom. We get bored due to lack of interest. We also get bored because the environment fails to stimulate you. This is where motivation plays a major role. I will write on motivation in my forthcoming articles.
“Boredom becomes peace when you are contented and unaffected by non-action.” Om Swami
The same applies to making work fun. Let's prove it.
Let's Prove IT
Being a mathematician, I like to prove things using mathematical theorem. So, let's do a little math.
Theorem:
Prove life is a party.
Assumptions:
Let's assume that:
- I shall work hard and focus on a goal.
- I shall work on what I enjoy.
- I shall take my time.
Proof:
We know that:
If A = B and C = B, that means A = C.
If Party = Having Fun and Work = Having Fun, then that means Party = Work.
Solution: I shall find work that I enjoy.
Conclusion:
If I find work I enjoy, my life shall be a party.
Dude! Where is The Party
“Well, all this is good but I still haven't found the answer to my question, how to make my life a party,” you must be wondering.
Do you want to know a secret? No one knows but you. You are the key to the answer. Only you can find it and you can only know it. You must figure out what you really want in your life. What your goals are and where you want to be in your life. And it is absolutely fine not knowing the answer right away. It takes time to figure it out. Sometimes it takes years and years. You should not be frustrated but continue to work hard towards your goal. Eventually, you will figure it out.
You should not do things to just do it. If you like design and art and want to be a designer, you should not do coding. You can do coding to pay the bills but you should be moving towards your goals.
Hope to see you at one of those parties! Cheers!
