Web development has grown rapidly in the past few years and it will continue to grow for the next several years. Today, there are more applications moving to the Web and the cloud than ever before.

In this article, I will list some of the most popular and in-demand Web development frameworks, in no particular order.

According to Buildwith trends, here is a list of the top 10 Web development frameworks as of December 2017. As you can see from this list, PHP leads web development followed by ASP.NET, J2EE, and Ruby on Rails.

Web Development Frameworks

While the above list may be the most popular web development frameworks of all time, my goal is to talk about the frameworks that are growing or have a greater potential to grow in near future.

HTML 5 combined with JavaScript and CSS may not be the out-of-the-box framework to build complete web applications but it is used to build front-end web applications more than anything else. Today, most of the web development frameworks require you to have a good understanding of HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

Angular

Angular (originally developed and referred as AngularJS) is an open-source front-end development framework for mobile and desktop that is based on JavaScript and MVC.

Angular is a JavaScript framework and requires you to have an understanding of JavaScript and MVC. The key characteristics of Angular include platform agnostic, developed for speed and performance, and incredible tooling.

Today, Angular has become one of the most popular Web development frameworks for building large scale web applications. Currently, there are 17,027 Angular jobs available on Indeed.com. The average salary for an Angular Web Developer and an Angular Senior Software Engineer is $78k and $114k respectively.

The current version of Angular is 5.0. Here is a good step by step tutorial to Learn Angular 4.0 in 10 Days.

ASP.NET Core

One of the Web development frameworks that is most likely to grow tremendously in coming years is Microsoft’s open source framework ASP.NET Core. ASP.NET Core is most likely to replace ASP.NET and ASP.NET MVC in the future.

ASP.NET Core is a cross-platform, high-performance, open-source framework for building modern apps, web apps, backend APIs, and client applications. ASP.NET supports and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

ASP.NET Core provides the following benefits:

  • A unified story for building web UI and web APIs.
  • Integration of modern, client-side frameworks and development workflows.
  • A cloud-ready, environment-based configuration system.
  • Built-in dependency injection.
  • A lightweight, high-performance, and modular HTTP request pipeline.
  • Ability to host on IIS, Nginx, Apache, Docker, or self-host in your own process.
  • Side-by-side app versioning when targeting .NET Core.
  • Tooling that simplifies modern web development.
  • Ability to build and run on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  • Open-source and community-focused.

Progressive Web Apps

Progressive Web Apps (PWA) concept was introduced by Google’s Chrome browser team and now it is becoming one of the mainstream technologies for web developers to build reliable, fast, modern responsive web user interfaces.

Progressive web apps have three simple requirements: HTTPS, a valid web manifest file, and a registered service worker containing a fetch event handler. These three requirements can be added to any site within 15 minutes, without breaking the existing code!

Browser vendors are enthusiastically behind progressive web application technology because it is levelling the playing field between native apps and the web. Consumers are choosing progressive by actively using sites that upgrade to PWAs. Currently there are over 2 billion consumers using mobile devices supporting progressive web application technologies. That number grows every day. Microsoft is launching full support later this year and Apple may soon follow.
