I am looking into creating a database program that will run off multiple machines

I want to have one computer acting as the server and the rest acting as the clients

I am using mySQL as the engine to run the database.

Should I also create a server application, to handle all the write requests to the database from the clients?

Basically I do not want any client to write at the same time, but I also do not want them to get like a write error.  I would rather have the info stored into a list that the server will read from (i guess a msg queue of some sort) and then have the server write to the database file.

So would I need to learn how to handle threads and such?
