Exam 70-315

Question

Hi I am preparing for Exam 70-315 : Developing Web application using Visual C# and Visual studio. I have experience of working in C# and visual studio. I need to know generally how long does it take to prepare for this exam (for a newbie with programming experience)? Besides ADO security testing and debugging what are the topics that are emphasized in this exam ? Do they ask about XML and web service in this exam? Are there any questions related to serialization and parsing data? Where can I find syllabus for this exam ? Which are the best guide to study Security testing and debugging part ? I did manage to pass 70-316 last week so I'm officially an MCAD now. Now I have to find a better job.

One other thing since I don't think Whidbey or ADO.NET 2.0 will exit beta status until mid-2005 you don't have to worry about everything changing anytime before April. And even April would be pretty early... I wouldn't expect any changes for about a year in all honesty. VS.NET 2005 probably won't be released until July and changes to the tests will take another 3 months or so. Finally if you'll read any material on the changes it's mostly additions here and there. The DataGrid class is being replaced by the GridView class though. It's 90% the same but has better support for stuff like multiple primary keys hyperlink columns etc. The Data Model object is much more streamlined... there's a new keyword (partial which allows a class to defined in multiple files... I'm surprised this wasn't in the earlier version; it's so hard for multiple programmers to work on one large class right now) the configuration pages have a GUI that's friendlier to administrators. Intellisense actually WORKS in HTML view now!! (This alone almost makes the upgrade necessary.) There's some new templates for common types of web pages and some new custom controls that come packaged. Then there's themes etc. etc... Basically what I'm saying is try to pass the test by early next year and then buy a decent book on the changes. I can't wait to pass 70-316 so I can really dive into it. Right now I don't want to clutter my mind with all sorts of extra stuff. If you wait another year the test will still be mostly the same but I'm expecting maybe 15% of the questions to change.

That's not quite what I'm saying... I'm just saying you might start seeing questions that reflect ADO.NET 2.0 and other changes to Visual Studio .NET. 90% of it is the same so I don't think they'll lose their value. In fact since most companies will have existing applications in the older versions it might be more important to know the older stuff until about late 2006 or so... Nevertheless if you take it before then you don't have to worry about getting questions about GridView and newer components that will be added.

Are they going to change curriculum in Jan 2005. And if they change the curriculum does that mean that old certification will loose their value? Thanks C_sharpkid

Thus far I've passed 70-315 (score 840ish) and 70-320 (810ish... it was hard) and I must say that 70-315 probably took up the most time in terms of studying. The syllabus for the exam is available at Microsoft's website. The toughest questions that I recall involved some esoteric details about ADO.NET and component-based programming. I remember my results being really bipolar on this one. (There are 6 bars at the bottom of your score sheet - 3 were totally maxed out 2 were about 3/4 filled and one was just below the middle. I think it was the component-based stuff which is what I was weak on...) Taking 70-320 before 70-316 was probably a mistake. I was sweating bullets the whole test and I was kinda surprised I passed. I intend to take 70-316 in about 5-7 days to become fully MCAD certified. If you're going to take 70-315 you've got time but don't dawdle. The curriculum COULD change next year to reflect version 2.0 of ADO.NET C# etc.
