selecting value from dropdownlist.

Question

Hi In my application I have one dropdownlistboxand two textboxes and radiobuttons. There is one add button which adds a new record to the database. Here I'm able to add a new record to the database and I'm showing that record in the dropdownlist. But I'm not able to do one thing. That is When I add a new record with code 55. That 55 should show in my dropdownlist as selected and also all the code's which are in dropdown should be in an order. Does any body have any Ideas how to do that? Thanks

Just found something out today... Never noticed it before but in Framework 1.1 you can databind to SelectedValue!! Woohoo! ' />

When it comes to web forms you have viewstate to contend with. The hardest thing to realize is that before your events listitemadded (if it existed) the Page_load event has to fire. To get the currently selected item you use: dropdownlist.SelectedItem.Value (or Text depending on what you want). To set an item selected you would use what I stated in the last post: dropdownlist.Items.FindByValue(MyStringValue).Selected = true; You don't need to reload the dropdownlist because it's bound to viewstate. Don't loop to get values from a dropdownlist! You have so many better methods that are all based on retrieving data via the options from System.Object.GetHashCode(). Why loop through items when a hash has already been established for you? Use things like dropdown.Items.FindByText or FindByValue.

I assume this is deffinetly for web forms (win forms handle dropdownlist a bit different) so would it make sense to add the item to the db.. refresh the dropdownlist and then set the selected to the value you just added example add record to db... get the id/uniquevalue reload dropdownlist set selected item where dropdonwlist.Items[n].value (You wil have to loop through the list to get a match) is this sort of what you are trying to do... just simpler?

Yeah it's kinda stupid whoever built that control didn't build in databinding for that control--I understand why but it kinda sucks. after you databind dropdownlist1.Items.FindByValue(selectedValueAsString).Selected = true; FindByValue and FindByText work If databinding worked for this control you would be able to say: '> I'm guessing it will work properly in the ASP.NET 2.0 release.
