I selected a blank Template and here is what I get, a blank Excel file connected to my SharePoint.

Share: If you want to share this Excel file, you need not send this as an attachment or save it to the local or mail it, just click in Share. It will reach them.

Save the file or else you will loose it. Don't worry, it will automatically save the file. You can also save it to your local or share it with the people you want.
