Backstage View in Word 2013

Backstage View

It has been introduced in Word 2013 and works as the central place for managing your document. To use Backstage View we can create a new document, save and open documents, print and share documents etc.

Viewing Backstage View is very easy; just click the "File" tab at the upper-left corner in the Ribbon. If you have not yet opened a document then you will see the list of all recently opened documents.

If you have already opened a document then it will show the details of the document in three columns that provide options for taking permission etc.

Option Description
Save Open the "Save" dialog box for a new document and ask for its name. In existing document save as.
Save As For an existing document, open the "Save as" dialog box and ask for its name and extension.
Open Opens an existing Word document.
Close Closes an open Word document.
Info Display information about an opened document.
Recent It contains the name of all recently opened Word documents.
New Creates a document
Print Prints an open document.
Save & Send Saves an open document and provides the option to send it through email.
Help This option provides help about Word 2013.
Option Provides various options related to a Word document.
Exit Used to close the document and exit.

Information about document

Click on the Info option present in the first column, it shows various information in the second column of the Backstage View.

  • Compatibility mode: If your document is written using a recent version of Word (2007/2010/2013) then the convert button will appear here to make it compatible, otherwise this option does not appear.
  • permission: This option is used for your Word document protect. You can set a password or you can lock your document to prevent modification.
  • Prepare for Sharing: Before knowing important information highlight this option. For example record you may edit for develop your document.
  • Version: If a document is saved several times and you want to use a previous one then use this option.

Document properties

Click on the Info option present in the first column, it shows several properties in the third column of the Backstage View. The properties include document size, page, total number of words in the document etc.

We can also edit several properties, click on the property value; if the value is editable then a textbox is displayed where we can insert a new or modified value.

Exit Backstage View

There are two simple ways to exit from Backstage View; they are:

  1. Click on the "File" tab
  2. Press the "Esc" button of your keyboard
