Installation Of Office Online Server For SharePoint 2016

Office Web apps get a new name with the release of the new version called Office Online Server (OOS). OOS is the new version release in 2016, which supports Exchange SharePoint 2016 and Skype for business/ Lync. OOS is used to view and edit Office document in Office Online(Browser). In other words, it is a lightweight Web based version of Office.

Deployment and configuration of OOS is easy and streamlined compared to the previous version. Office Online supports both Http & Https. It is highly recommended to use the https. You can access Office Online Server, using internal URL or an external URL or both URL's.

Nowdays you  have Office Online Server if you want the features given below.

  • Excel Service (it is part of Office Online Server).
  • Durable links, new feature in SharePoint Server 2016 require OOS.
  • Co-Authoring also depends on OOS.
  • Preview of the documents (search previews) also require OOS.

Single OOS Farm can be connected to SharePoint 2016, Exchange Server and Skype for business.

Licensing requirement

If you are an enterprise customer with a volume licensing account, then the view only license of OOS is covered but you have to pay extra for the create new, edit and save document. Best way is to contact your Microsoft account manager.

Requirement

You have to make sure you have the requirements given below before installation.

Hardware and software requirement

  • OOS can be installed on physical or virtual Servers.
  • OOS hardware requirement is almost same as SharePoint Server.

· 12 GB

· 64-bit, 4 cores

· 80 GB for system drive

· 80 GB for second drive

  • As of now, OOS is supported on Windows Sever 2012 R2 (64Bit)
  • There is no requirement for SQL Server as no database for OOS.
  • Windows Server 2012 should be updated or have at least following KB installed.
  • Office Online Server should be in the same forest as SharePoint.

Ports

  • Port 443 for HTTPS traffic.
  • Port 80 for HTTP traffic.
  • Port 809 for private traffic between the Servers that runs Office Online Server (if you’re setting up a multi-Server farm).

Dedicated Requirement

  • Make sure that no other Office Application or Server Application (SharePoint, exchange etc) is installed on the Server where OOS is going to be installed.
  • As SharePoint installation is not supported on the domain controller, the same is true for OOS.
  • SharePoint should be configured for the Claim based authentication. OOS does not support the classic authentication.
  • Always install Office Online Server on the dedicated Servers.

Installation Order

Please perform the installation in the order given below.

  • Installation of prerequisites.
  • Installation of the Office Online Server and Language packs.
  • Configure the Office Online Server and verify it.
  • Connect Office Online Server with SharePoint.
