get the number of hours between two textboxes

Question

Hi all This is my second post here last time Alan was a STAR and solved it straight away - THANKS again if your reading :-) I need some help again this time to get the number of hours between two textboxes. IE: i have two textboxes on a form . LoggedIn.text Loggedout.text What i want to do is calculate the number of hours difference between loggedin.text and loggedout.text. I can do this if i enter in loggedin.text: 07:00 am and in LoggedOut.text 12:00 pm - it will give me 5 hrs no problem but i need it for a timesheet and the user may start at 9pm and finish at 5am the following day and when i put these values in i get -hrs. I presume i need to add the date somehow to each value first (07/08/2008 9:00 pm) and (08/08/2008 05:30 am) but how do i get the number of hours and minutes in the difference? Any help with code would be greatly appreciated. If you need any further info then please let me know. BTW i am using vb.net 2008 (vb not C#) Thanks in advance.

Hi KT I'm not sure what your saving to the db i presume that you are saving a datetime to it (27-08-08 15:00:00) type. Assuming that your saving the datetime type try the following: SELECT * FROM YOURTABLENAMEHERE WHERE YOURDATETIMEFIELDHERE >= #27-08-2008# AND YOURDATETIMEFIELDHERE AND FORMAT( YOURDATETIMEFIELDHERE ' hh:nn:ss') BETWEEN '09:00:00' AND '15:00:00' Then if the time user 2 inputs is between the two values you can pop a messagebox. You may have to change the date format if you use the US format and input your tablename and fieldname but i think this should work for you

thanks for ur answer hope i try thisbut how can i check that those times doesn't overlaplike 1st user timein:8:00timeout=10:00am the i should not have 9:00am to 3:00pm here 9:00 is overlapping.can u please write a sample query for me to check this condition.i really appreciate ur help.

Hi KT When the 1st user enters the TimeIn/TimeOut is it written directly to something like a database if so then you can simply query the TimeIn/TimeOut fields of the database when the 2nd user tries to enter/save data. If the new times already exist in the database then just have a messagebox pop to let the 2nd user know the times already exist and to re-enter new times. hope this helps good luck.

i have two textboxes on a form .using aspx and vb Timein.text Timeout.text No two users can enter same time interval on same day.for example if 1st user timein=8:00am to timeout=12:00noon then other can't have in bettween thses interval on same day like timein=9:00am timeout=3:00pm this is error.how can i alert user not to enter on same interval time already inserted.

Hey Alan what can i say...... YOU DA MAN!!!!!! Again your solution was straight to the point - I was trying all sorts of fancy tricks all day never dawned on me to do that though - DUH! Anyway what you gave was perfect for the number of mins it works whether i have two times in the same day or not. I just added a little to turn the number of mins into Hours:Minutes. Now its PERFECT! Hi Satish and Niradip Thanks for your replies. I was basically doing what you suggested which works fine if i have say loggedin time as 15:00 and loggedout time as 21:00 - it gives me 6hrs What i need it to do is to work with 'overnight' times (for want of a better phrase.....) IE: logged in time 21:00 logged out time 05:30 (the next morning) Unfortunately i can't attach a pic here to give you an idea but basically i have several text boxes (loggedin loggedout sick holday and a few others going horizontally accross the screen with the last box being a TOTAL box. If i enter loggedin time and loggedout time and then in the far right hand TOTAL box i want the total number of hours/minutes to calculate ie: if logged in = 21:00 and logged out = 05:30 the the total should be 8.30. If at all possible i would prefer NOT to need to have the date visible on the loggedin/loggedout boxes (somehow have the app 'know' that because the values in the loggedout box are in the am and the values in the logged box are in the pm that it has carried over to the next day). I can't figure this out but i just think that from the users point of view all they want to enter are times - not dates because you know yourself they will inevitably forget to change the date to the next day and screw the whole thing up. (computer programs ALWAYS work perfectly until the user gets involved!! :- ) I hope i have made sense here...... If you can think of a way to do this i would be eternally grateful :):)

You can use TimeSpan DateTime lin = Convert .ToDateTime(TextBox1.Text); DateTime lot = Convert .ToDateTime(TextBox2.Text); TimeSpan ts = (lot - lin); int x = ts.Days * 24 + ts.Hours; TextBox3.Text = x.ToString(); I have written code in C#. Hope this helps

Hi Niradhip Thanks for replying to my post. I have already tried that which works fine if the two times are within the same day IE: 07:00:00 am and 12:00:00 pm (for the two textbox values). But when you put the values i need as in 9:00:00 pm and 05:00:00 am (respectively) i get the negative values i mentioned earlier in this case it is giving me -960 minutes (16 hours when it should be 8hours). As you can see that doesn't take into account the fact that the value in the second textbox is the next day.
