how does the operating system for an embedded system differ from one used for a general purpose computer

Operating system used for Embedded system is Application specific And meant to maintain the resources applicable to that product. Memory Constraints in embedded systems are high. Many of the Embedded products May required Real time handling capcity and should higly robost. The OS for many Embedded products are configured having less in size and higher is performance. Some Os used on Embedded products are VxWorks, MULTOS, Mucos etc.
Where as in General computers it is not like that, Memory is not a constraint at all. And also general computers are not Real time oriented also, a delay in execution is permitted. For example Windows 95,98,,,, 2000,,, and LINUX also available for PC.
