External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said the UN is like an old company that is not keeping up with the market but is occupying space.Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Jaishankar said the UN needs to reform itself to reflect the realities of the 21st century.
He said the UN was created in a different era and its structures and processes are no longer fit for purpose.
Jaishankar said the UN Security Council, in particular, needs to be reformed to reflect the current global realities.
He said the veto power of the permanent members of the Security Council is an anachronism that needs to be done away with.
Jaishankar also said the UN needs to be more transparent and accountable.
He said the UN should be subject to the same standards of transparency and accountability as other international organizations.
Jaishankar's comments come ahead of the UN General Assembly meeting in September, where India is expected to push for reforms of the UN.
India has long been a proponent of UN reform, and has called for the expansion of the Security Council to include more developing countries.
India has also called for the abolition of the veto power of the permanent members of the Security Council.
Jaishankar's comments are likely to be welcomed by other countries that have been calling for UN reform.
However, it is unclear whether the UN will be willing to make the necessary changes.
The UN has been criticized in the past for being slow to reform, and it is possible that it will resist calls for major changes.
Nevertheless, Jaishankar's comments are a sign that India is serious about pushing for UN reform.
It remains to be seen whether India will be able to convince other countries to join it in its efforts to reform the UN.
