As i know a video encoder is required because cctv cameras have analog signals. A video encoder makes it possible for an analog cctv system to migrate to a network video system. A video encoder connects to an analog video camera and converts analog video signals into digital video streams that are then sent over a wired or wireless IP-based network (e.g., LAN, WLAN or Internet). After the signal has been converted, you need to establish the connection between the camera and the .net application using rtsp protocol. If the connection has been established the rtp protocol will be used to transmit the media data (e.g. the picture of the video) toward the .net application. About rtsp and rtp connection you can read on the following web pages and documents: http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~hgs/rtsp/draft/draft-ietf-mmusic-rtsp-09.pdf http://www.onvif.org/specs/core/ONVIF-Core-Spec-v210.pdf http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3550 In the documents it can be seen that the implementation of these protocols are very complicated, so I think a camera sdk is recommended to be used. We are using ozeki's camera sdk in order to connect different ip cameras to our application. What is cctv? If you are trying to access a webcam or a camera attached to your laptop, you can use a flash webcam control.
