adding new item property to CheckedListBox

Question

Hi - I would like to add a tag (text) property to the items in a CheckedListBox. Does someone know how to do this? Thanks in advance

Thanks a lot. Being relatively new to .net I had forgotten that the CheckedListBox accepts objects. I was approaching this problem by trying to create a custom control and wasn't sure how to add a tag property to the items collection. This way does look a lot easier.

Ray: Since the checkedlistbox control accepts objects I would create an object with a tag property and add that object to the checkedlistbox. The class could be pretty simple; this works: (note be sure to override the ToString method; this is what the checkedlistbox control displays as text) // come up with an object with // whatever contained properties // you need (I was lazy these are // just public variables) public class NewCheckboxListItem { // define a text and // a tag value public string Text; public string Tag; // override ToString(); this // is what the checkbox control // displays as text public override string ToString() { return this .Text; } } Usage would is pretty simple: // create three new NewCheckboxListItems // to add to the checkedListBox control NewCheckboxListItem cb1 = new NewCheckboxListItem (); cb1.Tag = Book 1 ; cb1.Text = Twas the Night Before Christmas ; checkedListBox1.Items.Add(cb1); NewCheckboxListItem cb2 = new NewCheckboxListItem (); cb2.Tag = Book 2 ; cb2.Text = God Save the Queen ; checkedListBox1.Items.Add(cb2); NewCheckboxListItem cb3 = new NewCheckboxListItem (); cb3.Tag = Book 3 ; cb3.Text = Let's Get Outta Dodge! ; checkedListBox1.Items.Add(cb3); This will result in the display of the text in the checkedlistbox; here is an example of getting to the tag: private void checkedListBox1_SelectedIndexChanged( object sender EventArgs e) { // set CheckOnClick to true to save some // annoyance MessageBox .Show( (( NewCheckboxListItem )(checkedListBox1.SelectedItem)).Tag); } Alternatively you could create collections of checkbox controls and add them to a panel control (or form etc.); each has its own tag property already.
