In Windows each application normally runs in a separate process so that they're isolated from each other. Because .NET applications provide type safety guarantees it's possible to run several of them in a single process without them interfering with each other. Each application then runs in its own 'application domain' within the process. The .NET Framework provides the AppDomain class to create destroy and manage application domains.
