They are a set of controls that enable you to implement AJAX functionality in ASP.NET. You see earlier AJAX functionality was not inbuilt into ASP.NET. It is only from ASP.NET 3.5 onwards that it is inbuilt and you can use AJAX functionality through controls in the Toolbox. This is made possible through the ASP.NET AJAX extensions.
