Async calls are used to process a request on a worker thread from the thread pool. They can be used for two reasons (1) to make the user experience better in a windows by making a lower priority thread do some data processing in the background while the main ui thread can be responsive to the user (2) to avoid blocking a thread while doing a compute bound i/o task like reading from a file writing to a database or calling a web service. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Using async calls automatically throws you in the multi-threading arena which can get really complicated really fast and should not be done unless you have a really good reason.
