The ValidateUser method is called to verify that a username and password have been correctly entered for a user. It is called during the authentication process. FormsAuthentication.Authenticate method only validates a user name and password against credentials stored in the configuration file for an application. Such credentials are defined in the credentials Element for forms for authentication in web.config.
