i suppose it will attempt to keep the date format so delete or backspace wont clear it. it has to have a date value at all times so you'll have to type over the date values instead of deleting it. in other words delete or backspace will cause an invalid date value so it prevents it. you could use the keypress event on the control or form to intercept the backspace and if the masked edit ctrl has focus do something to it as a result of the backspace like setting it to a default date or rolling it back by one month/day/year.
