Best practive location to store application data

Hi I just wondered what the consensus on the best place to store application data is in a windows form application? E.g. I have some XML files which the applicaiton creates and maintains for data storage. Where is the best place to store these (with compatibility across windows versions) and how best to access this location? Thanks

Is storing in Program Files safe for Vista compatibilitity? What about the c:\Documents and Settings\%user%\Application Data\ ? Lots of software seems to use that and it seems like a tidy way to do things. But what about compatibility with other OS? Thanks

I would either create my on directory or store them in a directory in the Program Files directory for the application.
