DataSet - is a collection of DataTables and dataGrid is not a data object at all it's just a grid on screen that allow you to visualize content of data object (dataTable dataSet etc.). You can show dataSet objects with it. Everything that is edited (deleted) in dataGrid could be applyed to underlying data object. But most of the functins that are usuall for data-related applications you'll have to create by your own (adding columns inserting new tables etc.). So if you need powerful data-related application it's better to take Excel dataSheet control as base.

The Windows Forms DataGrid control provides a user interface to ADO.NET datasets displaying tabular data and allowing for updates to the data source. When the DataGrid control is set to a valid data source the control is automatically populated creating columns and rows based on the shape of the data. The DataGrid control can be used to display either a single table or the hierarchical relationships between a set of tables It's from MSDN DataGrid control (Windows forms). In other words - it's the only pre-created form control that allow you to show DataTable DataSource and DataView objects to user.
