DataSet - is a collection of DataTables, and dataGrid is not a data object at all, it's just a grid on screen, that allow you to visualize content of data object (dataTable, dataSet etc.). You can show dataSet objects with it. Everything that is edited (deleted) in dataGrid, could be applyed to underlying data object. But most of the functins, that are usuall for data-related applications you'll have to create by your own (adding columns, inserting new tables etc.). So, if you need powerful data-related application, it's better to take Excel dataSheet control as base.

When the DataGrid control is set to a valid data source, the control is automatically populated, creating columns and rows based on the shape of the data. The DataGrid control can be used to display either a single table or the hierarchical relationships between a set of tables" It's from MSDN, DataGrid control (Windows forms). In other words - it's the only pre-created form control that allow you to show DataTable, DataSource and DataView objects to user.
