A circular reference is like recursion. A really good example of it is this . An manufacturer must ensure there are no circular references in a parts list. Imagine a parts list for a large assembly such as an aircraft. If an engineer mistakenly enters a component as an assembly that contains the assembly that the component is in (I hope I got that right) then software that processes that parts list would be in an infinite loop. The problem might be difficult to find since detecting the error might require processing many records. Did you attempt to find definitions of Circular reference ? There are many .

A circular reference is a series of references where the last object references the first. This is a problem in programming because it can lead to a stack overflow.
