Are you talking here about storing color data in a SQL database? If so then as an alternative to storing a color's name you could store its RGB hex value instead. For example here are the codes for the HTML colors: http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_colornames.asp This would have the merit of only requiring 3 bytes to store each color. However if you wanted to return the color name in a query you'd have to write a function containing a giant CASE statement to map these hex numbers back to their color names which isn't very practical. Frankly I think it would be easier just to store the name even if it does require more storage.
