Connecting with sqlserver

Question

Hi Friends I am new to windows phone.why is sql sever cannot be directly connected to windows phone?what is the reason behind this?and what are the advantages of connecting sqlserver through wcf ?Please help me out. Thanks.

Hi You can't directly connect your windows phone app to SQL Server because of the Metro-Apps-Sandbox concept. Metro apps are run with quite restricted privileges. They only can comunicate with a server through a service. The only way around this limitation that I know of is a SQLLite integration into Windows 8 Apps.

Hi You can connect with Microsoft SQL Server from your Windows Phone app using WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) which is a framework for building service-oriented applications. Using WCF  you can send data as asynchronous messages from one service endpoint to another. A service endpoint can be part of a continuously available service hosted by IIS or it can be a service hosted in an application. Advantages of WCF : WCF supports more of the WS-* standards than Web Services. You can’t really do streaming or support atomic transactions etc in Web Services. WCF supports multiple binding’s HTTP WSHTTP TCP MSMQ etc. ASP.NET Web Services has only http. Web Services have no instance management i.e. you cannot have a singleton web service or a session-full web service. You can maintain state of web services but we all know how painful that is. WCF while very similar to Web Services also incorporates many of the features of Remoting and .NET Enterprise Services (COM+ Services Components). It is flexible and extensible like Remoting only more so. It is compatible like Web Services only more so.
