Connection Less and Connection Oriented Database Connectivity

Question

What is the difference between Connection less and connection oriented database connectivity ? Please explain with suitable example. :) Thanks in advance for appreciable support.

Hi SAM I hope you will get your answer by this reply. ADO is connection Oriented whereas ADO.NET is Connectionless. ADO has current record pointer. Where ADO.NET do not have. Dataset is a connectionless service but data reader is a connection oriented service. Connectionless means that it's not necessary to get connected to the database all the time when the application is running . It can fetch data offline or it will make a connection automatically when data is to be fetched from the database and the connection will be closed

Where to use connection oriented and where to use connection less connectivity it is depend upon the situation for example if you want to just fetch record from table than connection less is better but if you are performing some manipulation on data like withdraw money or deposite then go with connection oriented because in this senario connection less connectivity suffered from data concurrency problem.

Sahil my questions are for Deepak. I am trying to understand Deepak's question better. ADO.Net is not Connectionless. For example see this . Certainly a DataSet does not have a connection; it is clearly defined to be an in-memory copy of data. Note that make a connection automatically is inconsistent with saying there is no connection. Where is it said that Connectionless means that it's not necessary to get connected to the database all the time? I need to see an authoritative source that says that.

The term connection-less means no connection. I don't know of any way to access a database without a connection. There are ways to access a database in ways that the connection is done for us automatically but we have to do something such as create a data source to make the connection. So Deepak if you could tell us the conext in which the terms are used then that will help. Where do you see the words Connection less and connection oriented database connectivity used?

Various person say .Net support Connected and Disconnected artchitecture it's true one example which suites to above reply. Ado.Net DataReader and Dataset objects. DataReader object states it's the connection oriented cause when we are using DataReader we have to manually open and close the connection while DataSet states it's the connectionless cause when we are using Dataset object we need not to open and close connection manually.

In connection-less architecture we do not need to write the code for opening and closing the connection it handles connectivity automatically While in connection-oriented architecture we have open the connnection manually and close it throught the code. And Sahil you are right!

Hi Deepak Kumar From my point of view in connection less database connectivity once we had done the transection with the database conectivity will be loss. while in connection oriented dconnectivity after the completion of the transection the database connectivity will not be loss. But to do programming in batter way is to use the Connection less database connectivity Everytime it will connect with the database and do the operation with the database. i am not much sure regarding this if I am wrong then any-one please correct this post. Thanks
