console output for code

int x = 6; Console.WriteLine(x |= 1); Why is the console output 7 for this code?

Note that + is decimal add operator and | is a bitwise OR operator. It is incidental that output is same.

int x = 6; Console.WriteLine(x |= 1); Ouput is 7 int x = 6; Console.WriteLine(x += 1); Output is 7. In both cases output is 7. But in the second case binary is not coming in to picture. Why only in the first case?

To the best of my understanding! Just as we write a += 5 which gets translated to a = a + 5 the above gets translated to x = x | 1. The binary of 6 would be 0110. The binary of 1 would be 0001. If you OR these together it would be as follows: 0110 0001 ------ 0111 The result as you see it is decimal 7. Then you assign this result back to x. Hence the output. Hope it clarifies.
