Counting Date Fields

Question

I'm trying to count the Date cells in my datagridview, then display the total of cells but only if the date is today.

So in brief, if my datagrid contains 2 dates that are today my label will read "2" really I would like it to say "You have 2 appointments today" in one label.

Below is some code I'm using but it's not counting correctly?

object obj = row.Cells[2].Value;
DateTime dt;
if (!DateTime.TryParse(obj.ToString(), out dt)&& dt.Date == DateTime.Today) count++;

       label2.Text = count.ToString();

Oops, having a bad day today :( It should, of course, be: DataGridViewRow row = dataGridView1.Rows[i];

Thanks Vulpes, I did use your version but I some how need do declare "row" thats the reason I used the foreach statement. If i use that directly in my function it won't debug as "row" throws an error?

Just noticed from your penultimate post that you're iterating through the rows twice, once in an outer foreach loop and then again in an inner for loop. You'll therefore be overwriting label2 each time and, if the last row doesn't have any dates, the final value will be "0". If you're going with my suggested code then all you need is: int count = 0; for (int i = 0; i { if (row.IsNewRow) break; object obj = row.Cells[2].Value; if (obj == null) continue; DateTime dt; if (DateTime.TryParseExact(obj.ToString(), "dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm:ss", null, 0, out dt) && dt.Date == DateTime.Today) count++; } label2.Text = count.ToString();

Mahesh, It's using a dataset called "calDataset" to fill the data first from Mysql Database. Vulpes, my label still displays "0" it's a stange one that it doesn't event count the rows? This is most weird as when I run the code below on some text it seems to work so can't understand why in won't count through the date columns and count todays date? I run the below just to see if it finds the word "Test" and it does find it foreach (DataGridViewRow row in DataGridView1.Rows) { if (row.IsNewRow) break; object obj = row.Cells[4].Value; { string content = obj.ToString(); if (content == "Test") { label1.Text = "Test"; } } } Thanks for your help.

It may be a culture problem. Try replacing: DateTime.TryParse(obj.ToString(), out dt) with DateTime.TryParseExact(obj.ToString(), "dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm:ss", null, 0, out dt)

Even running a SELECT COUNT(*) on Db is better and faster than going through a DataGridView cells :)

Where is this data coming from? I am sure it is coming from a database through a DataSet or DataTable? Or other object? Why don't you search that data source and find number of occurrences match with today's string? Going through each cell, read, and compare data probably is slower. Something like this: DataTable.Select('ColumnName='+ TodaysDate)

If the DGV contains date strings rather than DateTime instances, then I think the way you had it originally is on the right lines except that the first term in your second 'if' statement shouldn't be preceded by '!': int count = 0; for (int i = 0; i { if (row.IsNewRow) break; object obj = row.Cells[2].Value; if (obj == null) continue; DateTime dt; if ( DateTime.TryParse(obj.ToString(), out dt) && dt.Date == DateTime.Today) count++; } label2.Text = count.ToString();
