You'll find it easier to understand the first one (which is incomplete in any case) if you indent it and number the loops: if(argument1) { if(argument2) { if(argument3){ } // added another set of curly braces here } } It can now be seen that the argument2 'if' statement will only be tested if argument1 is true and the argument3 'if' statement will only be tested if both argument1 and argument2 are true. Comparing this with the second one: if(argument1) { } if(argument2) { } the argument2 'if' statement will be tested regardless of whether argument1 is true or false.
